Hi everyone!! I hope you are all feeling healthy and well during this very uncertain time. I've been trying to remain as entertaining and positive on my social media as I possibly can because I know a lot of us are glued to the news trying to stay updated on everything surrounding the virus. Doing this can make us feel very anxious.
Here in Toronto, we are under a state of emergency with the province of Ontario, which means we are basically house-bound. There is not a whole to do, but if I'm being honest, I've been self-isolating since Huxley was born. Bryon's schedule doesn't leave me a lot of room to go out, so I would say I'm pretty used to this lifestyle. And I have to say, IT'S NOT THAT BAD!
But I also have a baby who keeps me very busy. I also worked from home for 2 years full time and I know how to make being at home/working from home enjoyable. I decided to put together a few ideas for all of you to keep you busy and happy while staying home and trying to stay healthy! I hope these ideas help you!
This is my favourite idea. I am an ambassador for Skillshare, but this aside, I genuinely LOVE using this platform. We all have downtime right now, so why not learn something new? GO FOR A WALK - IT'S OKAY
Self-Isolation is not quarantine. You can venture outside to areas that are not crowded and where you are not going to be touching 'unsafe' surfaces. With this being said, GO FOR A WALK! I head out with Huxley every morning and every afternoon for a 15-30 minute walk. We both enjoy the fresh air and don't feel like we've been cooped up as much.
ENJOY A LONG DRIVE
Change up your scenery by going for a long drive (if you have a car). Get out of the city - out of your town - and enjoy a new scene. Today, Bryon and I drove to Hamilton and picked up donuts at our favourite donut shop (they have a walk-thru window to limit contact!). It was nice to get away from the city and get out of the condo.
ORDER TAKE OUT
It's okay to treat yourself during a time like this. A lot of local restaurants are offering take-out or they have jumped on a food delivery service. Maybe you can't go out to eat, but you can create a similar experience at home. Also by doing this you will be supporting a local business that is already operating on very thin margins. Remember a lot of businesses are going to go under because of the virus. If you have the money - this is a great idea.
HOST A MOVIE NIGHT IN
A client told me about this. Pop some popcorn, get some movie snacks (Milk Duds, liquorice, sod pop, wine/beer etc.), turn the lights out turn the sound up and enjoy! If you have kids, build a fort for them to make it more fun!
DO A HOME WORKOUT
A lot of gyms are closed, which sucks. But that doesn't mean your workouts have to stop. I've been using the Sweat app for several months now because I don't have the luxury of going to the gym often enough. It's $119 USD for a year (cheaper than almost all gyms) and offers a variety of programs to choose from. A lot of local gyms are also live-streaming workouts on Instagram as well! You can also hop on YouTube and choose a workout from the channel FitnessBlender - their workouts are actually really great and they are free!
PURGE YOUR CLOSET
I feel like a lot of people are doing this right now. Take out whatever you haven't worn in a year and plan to sell. I've blogged about this idea previously - using Facebook Marketplace, VarageSale and Poshmark to sell your clothing to make room for new pieces. Now is a great time to do that - although you may want to wait to sell them!
PURGE FILES ON YOUR COMPUTER
I've actually been doing this. I've been clearing so much space on my computer. There were a lot of unnecessary files and photos that I didn't need to hold onto and were just taking up space. It felt good to clear them all out!
ORDER/GET GIFT CARDS FROM LOCAL RESTAURANTS TO USE WHEN SELF-ISOLATION IS OVER
Not everyone will be able to do this because money is tight for a LOT of people right now (there's just so much uncertainty). But if you have a steady income and you would have been going out to a restaurant otherwise, buy a gift card from a local restaurant (not a franchise but a locally-owned restaurant or café) and save it for when we all emerge from self-isolation. It will be a nice treat and it will also support locally-owned businesses!
COOK SOMETHING DIFFICULT
You have all those cookbooks - there has never been a better time to try them out. Choose a difficult recipe (one that is going to take a lot of time lol) and enjoy the experience. Even better if you have ONE friend (who is not carrying the virus lol) or a partner or even kids to help you out. Set the table nicely, pour some wine (or something non-alcoholic) and enjoy your creation! Don't forget to Instagram it - or it didn't happen! #foodporn
DO SOME BAKING
Baking is one of my favourite things to do when I have spare time. I love watching people enjoy the treats I bake, and I always feel a great sense of accomplishment when something I've baked for the first time turns out really well. Try a recipe you've never done before, get the family involved and enjoy a nice treat at home.
START A DIY PROJECT
I'm horrible at crafts and DIY projects but I know they bring people a lot of joy. If there is something you have been planning on creating now is a really great time to start!
