You may be confused by the title of this post. You're probably thinking, skipping the gym is not a workout. But I'm going to explain why it can be.
It was always my intension to include fitness on this blog - but I am by no means on expert on the subject. I actually really hate going to the gym. When I go to the gym, I'm never motivated, I don't feel like I get in a good enough workout and I probably don't have a clue about what I'm doing. So I had to make some changes if I wanted to shape up. I didn't feel comfortable forking out a huge chunk of my budget for a weekly session with a trainer. Bryon has quite of bit of knowledge with working out since his undergrad was kinesiology, but I didn't want to constantly tag along with him on his workouts...especially considering his fitness goals are substantially different than mine.
In order for me to start seeing results, I made some changes to my work out routine that have been seriously effective, and I'm going to tell you all about it!
1. I joined ClassPass
This is literally the best thing I have added to my fitness routine. I cannot say enough good things about this app! ClassPass is an app that can be used on your phone or desktop and gives you SO many options for fitness classes in your city. You can use this app in Canada and the U.S. and you get charged a monthly fee that based on the frequency you want to attend classes. I will admit that it is more expensive than a gym membership, but you do have a lot of options. In Toronto I love the classes at Elle Fitness and Social, a bootcamp organized by a former U.S. Marine at FitFactory, barre classes at Barreworks and on my rest days I love going to a hip hop dance class at Underground Dance Centre for a good cardio workout. Now, this is probably one of the best fitness options I've seen for busy mom's who don't have a flexible schedule or can't commit to a schedule or for people with outrageous work schedules.

2. I Created A Home Gym
There are days when the thought of going down a few floors to our condo gym seems like a lot of work lol. You know, you just finished work, you've had a glass of wine and you just don't want to be in public. I bought a few items so I could have an effective workout at home so I had no excuses. Here is all you need: Resistance loop bands, gliders (or disc sliders...whatever you want to call them), a yoga mat, I recommend a Bosu Ball, a couple dumbbells or kettle bells and if you want a yoga ball. I also want to recommend getting a foam roller for those days you are really sore (or need to crack your back lol) You can get an amazing workout with these items! 3. I Joined Intramural Sports With My Cousin
Another way to avoid the gym is to get involved in sports. You can find intramural sports in almost any community and they are seriously a lot of fun. Last year I played hockey with my brother and this year I'm doing inner tube waterpolo. There's tons of different sports to choose from, it's a great way to make new friends and it's also so much fun. You will get in a great cardio workout and in my case this season a good arm and core workout. In Toronto, I recommend this organization for intramural sports. You don't have to be an amazing athlete or have experience to play...I mean really, I've never played waterpolo in my life. I actually had to YouTube how to play it lol. Most of the sports are just for fun, while sports like hockey and soccer get a little more competitive.
4. I Started Taking Advantage Of Our Condo Pool
While I can understand that not everyone has free access to a pool, most people who live in condos do. I need to start doing this more often, but swimming laps is a fun way to get in some cardio. I used to be a competitive swimmer so this workout comes easy to me, but if you know how to swim you can still enjoy this if you have access to a pool. The benefit of this is that it's low impact and floating is great for your joints. This is the perfect rest-day activity.
All of this being said, I still go to the gym. Generally for cardio and some weight and body weight excercises. But the above gives me a much more effective workout. I hope some of the above suggestions are helpful for you and more motivating than a standard workout at the gym!
